The Illinois Longitudinal Data System (ILDS) enables state agencies to link early childhood, education, and workforce data to answer questions in areas important to Illinoisans and critical to understanding the state's future education and workforce needs.

The ILDS focuses on the end user, developing a system for reporting in areas important to Illinois parents, students, teachers, administrators, and decision-makers.

ILDS is structured to answer key questions crucial to understanding Illinois learners' and citizens' education and employment outcomes​. Examples of key questions include:
  • How many Illinois children are served by early childhood programs, and what is the impact of these programs on later learning?
  • Are high school graduates prepared to succeed in community colleges and four-year universities?
  • What are the employment outcomes for college graduates and completers of various workforce training programs?
