On March 18, join EdSystems for a special joint session of its I-WIN and STAMP networks for “Employer Models and Resources for Manufacturing Internships in High School!” Hear from two Illinois communities about how they support high school students (including student interns under age 18) to participate in career development experiences, including internships and apprenticeships in manufacturing.

Hear from:

• Steve Stewart, Director of People and Culture at Morton Industries, will share how they engage high school students in departmental rotations, moving from working in support departments like sales and accounting to on-the-floor experiences in welding and laser cutting. Morton Industries also hosts 25–30 high school students per year as part of their SkillsUSA apprenticeship program, in addition to their college interns.

• The McHenry County Manufacturing Pathways Consortium will share about their rotational student internships model, as well as the various ways they engage their high schools and community colleges to provide work-based learning experiences across the continuum and support for students to make informed decisions about their postsecondary pathways, including connecting them to apprenticeship opportunities.

Employer Resources: Plus, learn about the new employer-facing one-pager resources developed through a collaboration of EdSystems and the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association. These one-pager resources include exemplar employer models and resources gathered by an advisory committee of school district representatives and manufacturing industry professionals.

Join the Illinois Education and Career Success Network for a free webinar as part of its Awareness to Action: Spring Webinar Series, “Nurturing Future Talent: School and Nonprofit Collaboration to Provide Work-Based Learning Opportunities for High School Students.”

In today’s rapidly evolving job market, it is crucial to equip high school students with the skills and experiences they need to succeed in their future careers. Work-based learning programs and internships have emerged as effective strategies to bridge the gap between classroom education and real-world work environments. At the same time, schools are juggling many priorities, and it can be challenging to engage external partners effectively to offer these services.

During this session, participants will gain valuable insights into how two nonprofits partner with their school partners to provide career exploration experiences, internships, and virtual opportunities to engage with industry mentors. You will hear from Genesys Works and Junior Achievement of Central Illinois, along with their high school partners, about how they collaborate to design and implement inclusive and equitable experiences for students. By the end of the session, attendees will be equipped with practical strategies and resources on how to create strong partnerships to empower students to thrive in the workforce.

Presenters:

• Maribel Moreno, Program Director Genesys Works – Chicago

• Nathan Binns, Cooperative Education/Work-Study Citywide Program Manager for Chicago Public Schools

• Angie Houck,  Program Director, Junior Achievement of Central Illinois

• Mary Pille,  President, Junior Achievement of Central Illinois

SBDC Day is a national, collective proclamation of the impact America’s Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) have on the success of our nation’s dreamers, innovators, and doers – America’s small businesses.

SBDC Day unites the nearly 1,000 SBDC centers across the country and the hundreds of thousands of clients they serve by sharing, in real time, the success stories and notable impacts SBDCs collectively have on the small business community. This day will be celebrated with social media campaigns, public relations initiatives, and other online events.

Add to Calendar 10:00 AM 3/20/202411:30 AM America/Chicago Employment Barriers Faced by ELLs & Strategies to Overcome

This Workforce Webinar focuses on Employment Barriers Faced by ELLs and Strategies to Overcome Them.

This webinar will look at the employment barriers faced by several of the Polish American Association's clients, particularly language and cultural issues. We will then discuss several strategies we offer our clients in our programs to overcome these barriers. We will cover our ESL program, our CIVICS program, and our Bridge/ICAPS programs. As always, we are always focused on helping our clients attain employment, and we believe these strategies are effective in doing so.

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

Have a clear understanding of what the PAA finds effective for helping ELL navigate the employment process. They can hopefully take this information and supplement it with the great strategies they are already using to help their clients successfully gain employment.

This event will be delivered as an online webinar via the Zoom platform. *Registered attendees will receive a calendar invite with a link to the live webinar and the educational the afternoon before the event. Entrepreneurs that aspire to start a business should begin the process of writing a business plan. Reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities will be made if requested at least two weeks in advance. Contact: Sarah Gliege, sgliege@iwu.edu

UNITE HERE Chicago Hospitality Institute (UHCHI) is a partnership between the UNITE HERE Local 1 Labor union and hotels and food service employers in the Chicago area. UHCHI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) institution and labor-management/Taft-Hartley training fund serving and providing training benefits to employers, the union, and its members. In response to the hospitality sector being one of the largest sectors in Chicago, UHCHI was designed to improve the Chicago area’s tourism and hospitality industry by increasing the skill level of its workforce.

Our mission is to up-skill incumbent hospitality professionals, build new talent for the hospitality industry, and place people into unionized career pathways through training programs that include registered apprenticeships. We recruit, train, and retain skilled employees and provide ongoing professional development and support to individuals in the Chicagoland area.

This is a two-part work training model, an incredibly fun and rewarding learning journey. With cutting-edge curricula, premier instructors, and close collaboration with area employers, the UHCHI Culinary Apprenticeship is the first and ONLY US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for the position of Chef de Partie in the State of Illinois. Upon completing the UHCHI apprenticeship program, graduates can move up the career ladder in high-quality hospitality jobs.

Business Status: Existing - 2+ Years of Business Revenue

Skill Level: Intermediate

You have done your research and know which governmental agency or prime contractor you want contact and start doing business with. When you call the OSDBU or SBLO, (You will also learn more about whom these people are and how to find them.) you ask all of the right questions and the conversation goes well. At the end of the call, you are told to send over a Capability Statement for further review. Brakes on!

Do you have this document? Do you have the expected information laid out in a way that is easily readable and defined? This document is a crucial tool for all levels of government contracting, including federal, state, and local entities. It also serves as an introduction device for agencies, prime contractors, and teaming partners. A well done Capabilities Statement demonstrates proof of your qualifications, past performance, and sets you apart from your competition.

This webinar will go over what you should include in your capabilities statement, what types of information are expected, and how to best leverage your past work experience to demonstrate your ability to perform on future opportunities.
