The month of May is Foster Care Month nationwide and Foster Parent Appreciation Month in Illinois. This month we want to thank foster families throughout the state who provide temporary safe havens to youth and encourage other families to become foster families as well. Here are some important numbers of foster care and families in Illinois:
21,000 youth live in foster care in IL:
- 8,500 live with a foster family
- 11,300 live with relatives
- 600 live in group homes or institutions
- More than 14,000 foster families open their homes to children in need of a safe haven
407,000 children and youth are in foster care in the United States.
