SOME JOBS ARE MORE RECESSION-PROOF THAN OTHERS


If you are looking for your first job or for a better job, career advisors offer suggestions for jobs which seem to have more staying power in the current economy.

Worry about the future of chosen career paths has become a national obsession. A Kiplinger.comExternal link opens in a new window article sites a survey in which college students ranked job security as a higher priority than a large salary or job advancement. There is no such thing as a recession-proof job, but career advisors see some career paths as more secure than others. Jobs in the medical field, accounting, specialized and higher education, and governmental employment seem to rank higher in the area of job security. This only works, of course, if everyone doesn’t rush the high side of the boat.


If you are looking for a job, keep in mind that there are many peripheral job opportunities under the umbrellas of medicine, education, accounting, etc. For example, accounting firms need top-notch administrative assistants, and medical facilities need accountants. Broadening your job search into these and other more recession-proof businesses may be advantageous.

More job avenues in the areas of green retro-fitting, green manufacturing, green energy, and environmental science may be available in the near future. A close eye on the stimulus package and credit availability is needed to determine the direction of these job possibilities.

  • IL Department of Transportation - Economic Recovery Information

    The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) includes $48 billion for transportation infrastructure consisting of highways and bridges, mass transit, rail and aviation.

    The transportation system in Illinois is at a crossroads, and is in need of the additional federal funds provided by the ARRA. ARRA funds will be utilized to support safer transportation systems, address environmental concerns, offset the erosion of the construction dollar, address the crippling levels of congestion/delay and meet the transportation demands of the future.

    In order to access the first half of the highway stimulus funds coming to Illinois, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has identified projects that can be awarded quickly to put people to work in the construction industry and to utilize the upcoming construction season. While the list of projects is larger than expected in the first wave of funding, it will allow Illinois to be in a position to spend any funds redistributed from other states.
