Job satisfaction received high marks from Physical Therapists in a University of Chicago survey.

The need for physical therapists(PT), physical therapy assistants, and related workers, is projected to grow. As baby boomers age and current military and veterans experience increased health problems, many more PT care givers will be needed. Career seekers who enjoy math and science, like helping others, are physically fit, and are naturally optimistic may find the area of physical therapy appealing.

There are a variety of career possibilities and job responsibilities within the field of physical therapy. Those with the highest pay potential require extensive training, but other job possibilities require as little as a high school diploma. Whatever the position or pay, those employed within the PT field work to relieve pain and improve the mobility, strength, function, and fitness of their patients. Methods of treatment include the use of specialized exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), deep massage, resistance equipment, acupuncture, and yoga movements.

Physical Therapists (PT)  must have a Master's degree in physical therapy, and some positions require further education. PTs must also pass licensing exams. Median pay is in the $70,000 range. In addition to providing direct clinical procedures to patients, PTs develop treatment plans, complete case paperwork and direct assistants and aides.

Physical Therapy Assistants   also provide clinical procedures to patients as directed by a physical therapist. They may also do clerical work and other duties. PTAs generally hold an associate degree from an accredited PTA program and have CPR and first aid Certifications. They may be required to pass a licensing exam. Median pay is in the $40,000 range.

Physical Therapy Aides   have, at the minimum, a high school diploma and receive on the job training. Their job duties include care and cleaning of treatment areas and equipment and transportation of patients within the treatment facility. Their pay is in the $22,000 range.
