The Illinois Department of Insurance is scheduled to be at the Malcolm X College Job Fair on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 We are looking for graduating seniors and master degree candidates whom upon graduation will have at least 21 hours in accounting for our Insurance Company Financial Examiner Trainee Position. 
As an examiner you could participate in a team environment where you are responsible for the identification of risk inherent in an insurer’s operations and utilize that information in formulating the ongoing surveillance of the insurer. Specifically, your goal in a risk focused examination is to assess the quality and reliability of an insurance company's corporate governance and to understand how to identify, assess and manage the risk environment facing the insurer.  As an examiner good written and oral communication skills are a must.

Duties of this examiner position are conducted at the insurance company site which may require extensive travel in Illinois and the United States; however, the majority of the work is located in Chicago land area. The Department of Insurance pays for your travel (meal per diem, mileage reimbursement, lodging, etc.) to the exam site.

2010 Schedule of Work Incentives Forums to Address Concerns of Job Seekers with Disabilities

The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) will host a series of FREE Work Incentives, Planning and Assistance Forums for job seekers with disabilities.  
At the forum, participants who receive Social Security Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) will learn about how work income can affect their benefits.  Specifically, attendees will hear from experts about:
-Work incentives such as SSA Ticket to Work that allows beneficiaries with disabilities to test their ability to work without fear of immediately losing monetary, medical, or other benefits;
-Preparing for a job search;
-Interview strategies and employment-related issues; and
-Disability rights of employees with disabilities.

MOPD's Certified Community Work Incentives Coordinators will also be available to meet individually with the beneficiaries to help them anticipate and plan for changes that may occur in their state and federal benefits as a result of employment.

The 2010 forums, except for July 15, will take place at the MOPD Field Office, 2102 W. Ogden Avenue, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

March 25 (Targeting deaf and hard of hearing job seekers.)
April 22
May 27 (Targeting blind and visually impaired job seekers.)
June 24
July 15 (To be held at Access Chicago Expo at Navy Pier)

Green Jobs Initiative Training Program

The Green Jobs initiative is a jobs training program that will prepare unemployed or "on the bench" construction workers, engineers, electrical, and heating & cooling workers that are interested in "greening up" their skills for current and future Green economy.

Program Benefits:

  • Obtain up to 3 industrial certifications (Building Operator Certificate, Building Performance Initiative, Building Energy Technology)
  • Earn up to 21 college credit hours (6 courses)
  • Job Placement assistance
  • Childcare & Transportation assistance
Program Eligibility & Requirements:
  • Be 18 years old
  • Be a legal resident
  • Experience working in construction
  • Live in one of the following communities: Pilsen, Little Village, Back of the Yards, McKinley Park, Brighton Park, Archer Heights, Gage Park or Bridgeport
  • Commit to completing a 12-19 month jobs advancement training program
  • Be unemployed or low-income
  • Take a placement exam (score at least 7-8th grade)

City Creates Bid Incentives to Promote Disabled-Owned Businesses


On January 13, the Chicago City Council passed an ammendment to the Business Enterprise Owned by People with Disabilities (BEPD) ordinance to encourage the utilization of City-certified, disabled-owned businesses and contractors.

"BEPDs are underutilized business enterprises in Chicago," said Mayor Daley.  "The new bid incentives underscore the City's commitment to increasing procurement opportunities for disabled-owned businesses by stimulating the participation of BEPDs as both prime contractors and subcontractors."

The incentive levels are contingent upon the percentage of the contract performed by the BEPD.  The earned credits would then be applied as a bid incentive to future contracts sought by the contractor for up to three years.  The BEPD program was established in 2002 as part of the City's commitment to address the high unemployment rate of people with disabilities by enhancing economic opportunities for the disability community.

New Transitional Jobs Program for Military Veterans


Attention Chicago Veterans!  The Albany Park Community Center can assist you with your unemployment and underemployment issues.  Thanks to a new Veterans' Transitional Jobs Program funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, qualifiying veterans will receive federally subsidized wages for the first few weeks with a new employer.  This is a great incentive to hire Chicago Veterans. 

Who qualifies for services?  Eligibility is income-based.  However, if you are a veteran and a Chicago resident you are strongly encouraged to contact the Albany Park Community Center to determine if you qualify.

When?  We hold an introductory program orientation every Monday (excluding holidays) at 10:00 a.m.

    The Woodworking and Solid Surface Manufacturing Training Program is a vocational training program that prepares participants for a wide range of skilled occupations in the wood products and solid surface manufacturing industry. Since 1993, the program has graduated 589 trainees and has placed approximately 513 of its program graduates in full-time, training-related, non- ubsidized employment.

    Created as a Community-Business Partnership the program seeks to meet the employment needs of low-income community residents and dislocated workers while developing a skilled workforce for the local woodworking industry.
