Employees are your most valuable asset and finding great employees is an extremely important component of your business success. Replacing ineffective employees is a drain of your time, energy, and money. Posting effective job advertisements will help assure the best pool of job candidates.

Start the applicant search by carefully analyzing the needs of your business. Then review the job description for the position you need to fill. If you have not written job descriptions or if the description needs to be updated, this is an ideal time to address the process. Think about the culture External link opens in a new window of your workplace when you are writing job postings. If your business environment is “flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts” don’t advertise for “your man Jeeves.” Even if the job candidate has the skills and experience you need, they will not be a good fit if their sensibilities do not mesh with your business environment.

A job posting or advertisement need to get the attention of the best potential job candidates and move them to apply immediately. Keep the following in mind when composing the advertisement:

  • The size of the advert should not be overly large (conveys wastefulness) or overly small and easily overlooked.
  • Job Adverts should not be flashy. You need to fill a job position – not a theme park.
  • Do not use jargon. You will attract applicants who are confused about your needs.
  • Keep the advert short and simple.
  • Make sure readers know how to apply.
  • The most effective adverts indicate salary.
  • Tell applicants about the nature of your business.
  • List needed skills and experience.
