Step 1:
Get customers started connecting them to computer skill enhancement resources.

A. Help customers understand importance of digital literacy.


These documents offer insight into the idea of digital literacy. Use the information from these documents to educate your customers on the importance of having and maintaining a solid understanding of computer technology.

B. Assist customers with finding resources to enhance their computer skills.


There are a variety of places where an individual can find resources to enhance computer skills. These include workshops, online articles, online computer courses, online games, and more.

Orientation: Include the Computer Skills section of Illinois workNet in Orientations.

Find Local Workshops/Training: Find local workshops or classes posted in the News & Events for Individuals.

Advertise Free Computer Training:
1. Put together the information to post in www.illinoisworknet.com for free.
Post Local Information Request (Web)

2. Submit local information to add to Illinois workNet.

Find Online Computer Courses and Resources: Computer skill enhancement resources are available in Determine Path and Take Online Courses. Resources are divided into three groups: New Computer User, Intermediate, and Technical Professional. The online resources range from websites that teach you how to use a mouse through technical professional online courses.

Print Materials: Listed below are tutorials that will help your customers improve their computer knowledge and skills.

  • BBC WebWise Computer Basics (PDF Link opens in a new window): This tutorial covers the basics of using a computer. It includes using the mouse, keyboard, and printing. It also explains what windows and icons are, and how to manage photos and music.
  • BBC WebWise Internet Basics (PDF Link opens in a new window): This tutorial covers the basics of the internet; using it, searching, registering with a website, emailing, and online shopping.
  • BBC WebWise Social Media Basics (PDF Link opens in a new window): This tutorial covers the basics of social media, including setting up an online profile, updating status's, sharing photos, and organizing events.
  • Illinois workNet's Getting Started for New Computer Users handout (MS Word Link opens in a new window) (PDF Link opens in a new window): This handout starts with a self-assessment quiz to identify your current computer skills. It then covers basic computer skills, including getting comfortable with computers, enhancing your skills, computer safety, key word searching, and registering with Illinois workNet.

Step 2: 
Determine the technological proficiency of your customers by having them take this Computer Skills Self-Survey (Web) (PDF Link opens in a new window).

Individuals at the basic computer skill level may need to start with the Getting Started for New Computer Users Handout (MS Word) Link opens in a new window (PDF Link opens in a new window). Have customers set up a My Illinois workNet Account. Remind them to write down their username and password in the space provided in the New Computer Users Handout. This will give them step-by-step instructions and practice using a computer.

Step 3:  Assist Customer in Selecting Training - Find computer courses and resources for enhancing computer skills, from new computer users to technical professionals.

Have customers write down or review their long term goals. Then determine which free online courses would help them reach their long term goals. Set short term goals for completing the free online courses.
