New HUD and EPA regulations required all contractors that disturb lead-based paint in homes, schools and child care facilities built before 1978 be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination effective April 22, 2010. To be in compliance with this new law, a certified individual must remain onsite at all times during the construction/remodel phase.
Local contractors needed to be incompliance with this new law in order to continue to work on these structures. If they did not have their staff trained, they would lose business which in turn would have caused significant layoffs in the construction sector in this area.
The certified lead based paint training consisted of a one day training session. The response to the training was so great, that 4 separate training sessions had to be scheduled to train the 74 workers/contractors/renovators. The certification allows them to continue to be employed in this sector and to work on these structures built prior to 1978.
This training was considered a green initiative, since it was needed to adhere to EPA regulations.
LWIA 20 funded $4,493.00 of the training and the employers/association invested $6969.
73 workers completed the training.
