After being laid off from Caterpillar in February 2009, I, Kathryn, contacted the Livingston Workforce Services office with an interest in beginning classes towards a radiography degree. I quickly completed all requirements needed for the program and was enrolled in classes beginning the Summer 2009. In November of that year, I was interviewed and hired to work for the AFL-CIO as a peer counselor for Caterpillar located in the Livingston office. I continued to work full time in that capacity as well as part time as a CNA on weekends until I was reemployed in the manufacturing field in May 2010.
Shortly after beginning the Spring 2010 semester, I discussed the option of changing curriculum because I enjoyed working part time as a CNA. Because the radiography and nursing curriculum required similar general education classes, my transfer was approved. I soon found out that I was accepted into Heartland Community College’s Nursing program beginning Fall 2010 semester. I continued to work full time throughout my first year of nursing school by working 3rd shift. After obtaining my LPN license at the end of the Summer 2011 semester, I chose to end my employment with the manufacturing company and take on PRN work. This allowed me more flexible hours and the opportunity to see my husband and three sons on a more regular basis.
I graduated from Heartland Community College’s Nursing Program on Friday, May 18th. My classmates also voted me class speaker for their pinning ceremony. I am currently working as an RN at Bromenn Hospital.
