My experience with Gads Hill was fun. I met a lot of people who were cool and willing to work. I learned a lot from this program such as how to mow grass and how to cut trees. I also enjoyed raking the leaves up and having conversations with my team. What I liked most about the program is they help you with a lot of things such as obtaining your birth certificate and state ID. Gads Hill also helped me enroll in school. I am grateful to be a part of Gads Hill and want others to have the same experience that I did. The job that I am interested in is delivery and Gads Hill taught me the roots and the steps to get the next job that I am interested in. They taught me how to save money and taught me that in order to make it in life you have to put one foot forward. Gads Hill helped me by helping me enroll in Job Corps, which has been my goal for a while. Now my goal is almost completed thanks to the Gads Hill program. The program also helped me update my resume. The other thing I liked most about the program is that I had to work hard and with the help of staff I completed some of my goals.

My name is John Myles and I worked at the Chicago Community Alliance doing maintenance work and beautifying the neighborhood. My responsibilities were to make sure that the locations we went to were made clean. I learned to work as a team and to get the job done quicker. After this job I am planning on going into maintenance or delivery. This job helped me gain work experience and showed me that I am responsible, and I have taken away lessons of teamwork. This job helped me to get my next one, which will assist me in buying an apartment, saving money for my child, and getting nice things, as well as keeping me busy and off the streets.

My name is Juan Paramo. I’m currently enrolled in Harold Washington College pursuing my associates in Science, to transfer to IIT for Electrical/Computer Engineering. I mentor a FIRST Robotics team, team 2136- Also called the Impossible Mission Force. As a FIRST Robotics Competition Mentor, my job is to work with the team members during the build season, designing, building, and fabricating a functional robot for competition. As a mentor I engage and inspire students in sportsmanship, teamwork, and gracious professionalism. During the summer of 2014, I was given the opportunity to work at Gads Hill Center as a front desk receptionist. As a receptionist I greeted, assisted and directed guest, staff, visitors and the general public. As a receptionist I also answered all incoming calls and handled caller’s inquiries, and provided administrative support that included filing, data entry, and staff checks-ins. Working for Gads Hill Center as a receptionist helped me increased my communication, professionalism, problem solving, critical thinking, work ethics, behavior, and interpersonal relationships skills. At Gads Hill Center I have demonstrated my leadership abilities, and considerate respect for the ideas and suggestions of my fellow team members. Determined to learn, I learned to use tools, materials and technology quickly; I listened carefully, weighted suggestions thoughtfully and provided encouragement to my fellow work members. After this Great experience, whatever task I take on, I’m sure I will meet with the same dedication, persistence, honesty and courtesy that I have shown over the past few weeks of working for this amazing organization that is Gads Hill Center.

This program has showed me different skills I need to learn to get further in life. During this program I learned how to carry myself, and also talk to people in a professional manner. I learned that you must always take chances because you never know how far you can go. While in this program, I got to do online classes to graduate high school. With that being said, I was blessed with a second chance and I proved myself.

I can't express the joy that DHS-2014 SYEP Summer program has done for the youth in our community. Some will be hired in the waste management dept. for the City of Madison and others are scheduled for upcoming interviews. However; out of 106 applicants we were able to hire only 12 youth. So the need is overwhelming, and if there is an opportunity to have a wrap around program, we will welcome it. This has been a great experience for me. The gift of helping is an awesome feeling. Thank you Yolanda Crochrell, Executive Director of Quad City Community Development Center.

My name is Roosevelt Kincaid and I am apart of Urban Corps Recycling. We are very grateful that the Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House provided us with the summer workers. We feel as though we have the "cream of the crop". Their ability to comprehend the "Green Philosophy" by participating in classroom and community oriented activities is incredible! They possess the amount of effort and dedication an employer requests. They have also discussed career opportunities, employment options, life skills, and the importance of being involved in community based activities. These youth workers are great!

The Summer Youth Employment Program has been very beneficial to my childcare facility. Working with young children is very rewarding, however it is also challenging. Having additional staff in the classrooms is wonderful! We always budget to have an additional staff person to help with absences due to vacation and illness. But to have 3 more additional people at the center made things run very smoothly. More one on one interaction with the children is "just what the doctor ordered!" The children and staff at Debra T. Thomas Learning Center 2 are truly thankful. I enjoy assisting in training the youth and hope we are one of the fortunate recipients of the SYEP next year. Thanks!

I think www.illiniosworknet.com is a very helpful website for young kids because it's a lot of what they don't know and getting them prepared for what they want and want to do in life. Thank you Illinoisworknet. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time and hope to continue to learn more everday.

First and foremost, I'm grateful that the youth of the Chicago land area were able to benefit from this opportunity. I'm most grateful that I was one of the recipients. I worked for HRDI which is a major corporation that provides human resources for a number of people. I know this will be a great addition to my resume but it has also made me aware of the work I want to do in the future.

Once I finished my first year of College at Indiana State University, I knew that I would need a summer job. I had worked for the Springfield Urban League the Summer before so I figured I would re-apply, and thankfully I was rehired. Once I started going to meetings at the Urban League, I was introduced to Illinois workNet, which has helped me to understand what I need to do in life. It taught me about budgeting, how to find a job, how to find out info on the job and also how to follow up with jobs. Illinois workNet has helped me throughout the summer along with the Springfield Urban League, in which I am very thankful.

Working for the SYEP 2014 has encouraged me in more ways than one. Not only has it taught me how driven I am, but it has taught me just how much I can be an encouragement to someone else. I've learned how to educate my peers with the work experience and knowledge I obtained prior to this job. My supervisors and work readiness instructors motivated me to know that it is never too late to strive for the success I've always envisioned. They put me in a room full of my peers; when I would normally work in the background, and helped me to see my capabilities. I simplified computer programs and information in a way that anybody could comprehend, without any complication. Here at Quad City they inspired me to write out my goals for my future. Even when I thought all hope was gone, working for the SYEP 2014, is preparing me for greater!

My name is D'Andria and I was born and raised in Chicago. Growing up, I was pushed by my family to get through school and become successful. But, with parents working so much, I didn't know who to turn to for advice. After joining the Summer Youth Program, I realized there are so many great people out there to help me. I completed it and came out a better person. I learned responsibility, self-motivation and how to organize myself. I would recommend this program to anyone.

I've participated in my share of community organizations coming together and giving back to the community, but this is my first employed youth program. The WIA workshops provided me with an insight into how to implement an effective work-ethic. Whether if it was from encouragement, life lessons, or just advice on attire; the workshops provided a prep course on life's factors. This caused me to cross examine myself and to work on anything that I find may have fallen short. I find that I'm a much more driven and open individual than I was before.

I wasn't brought up in a family oriented environment. I began to care for myself at an early age. Since then I have remained positive and continued working towards my goals. I hope to see many other young teens chose this path as well.

After completing 11th grade at Morton East, I began to search for a summer program that would be meaningful and productive. My continuation in volunteering for Representative Elizabeth Hernandez paid off as I was introduced to SYEP by an assistant of hers. I was immediately interested in the program, not only for the fact that I was looking to become a paid intern again, but because it had several other traits that felt different from my past experience. I was given the number to reach the coordinator, Wanda Amador, and so I called and she gave all the information and the requirements. The actual application process was simple because of the one-on-one assistance I was given, and I began to work a few days later. My worksite was St. Mary of Celle and my on-site supervisors were Xochitl Flores and Elva Noriega. I assisted them in providing more employment opportunities for youth like me, so I found the position rather valuable. Many work skills of mine flourished within this environment. The phone calls I made became more fluent and confident, and my organizing skills improved. I was given actual responsibilities and was entrusted to do certain things that I became good at over time. I improved my social skills and became more open. This helped me develop several friendships within the program, not only with the youth but also my supervisors. Overall, the skills I have gained can be applied to several other work areas in the future. The program gave me a taste of the reality of what work is. It was never about simply getting paid. I learned quite a lot from my time spent here. I enjoyed coming in every morning. I felt like I was needed to some extent. I was given a sense of what real responsibility is, and now I have been given a bit of preparation on my upcoming work experiences.
