School Counselors - Employment and Outlook

Employment
Major employers:
  • Schools, colleges, and universities
  • Job training services

Outlook
The number of students in school is expected to increase. This will create a greater demand for counselors. In addition, the number of duties counselors have is growing. This means each one must do more. Additional counselors will be needed so that students have access to them. However, growth in this occupation will be limited by school budgets. Counseling programs are some of the first items that are reduced when budgets are cut.

In Illinois, employment of school counselors is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. About 330 job openings are expected each year.

The table below provides information about the number of workers in this occupation in various regions. It also provides information about the expected growth rate and future job openings.InstructionsNotes
