Fish and game wardens may advance by gaining and demonstrating skills learned through training. Similar to other police agencies, fish and game warden positions are based on military rank. Wardens start as a cadet, move up to lieutenant, and then to captain. Some agencies may require taking exams for advancement or supervisory positions. Fish and game wardens may also advance by taking positions in other states. Moving to other states may increase wardens' salary.
